Abstract

This study serves as a foundational step toward applying Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) to aircraft weapon systems by analyzing collected maintenance data and evaluating its usability and limitations. CBM aims to enhance system availability and reduce maintenance costs, requiring historical failure cases and maintenance records as core data inputs. Focusing on coded structured data–such as Work Unit Code (WUC), Action Taken Code (ATC), and How Malfunctioned Code (HMC)–included in fixed-wing aircraft maintenance records, this study identifies key issues that must be addressed for effective CBM implementation. The analysis revealed several data quality challenges, including input errors, use of undefined codes, inconsistencies in code selection across technicians, and limitations in recording multiple codes per maintenance event. These findings highlight the necessity of preprocessing and refining maintenance data before applying it to CBM-related research. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the need for clear data governance, improvements in maintenance recording systmes, and integration of unstructured text analysis techniques. Extending this approach to rotorcraft maintenance data is expected to improve data reliability and broaden the scope of CBM research in military aviation domains.
