Abstract

Conventional smart devices employ a single vibration actuator, which limits their ability to convey multidimensional information such as direction. In contrast, multi-array vibrotactile haptic systems are capable of representing a variety of vector information. However, research on how to configure physical parameters — such as actuator arrangement and movement speed — to optimize vector information transmission remains insufficient. This study aims to analyze the effects of such physical parameters on the efficient delivery of 2D vector information through a virtual vibration actuator rendering algorithm implemented on mobile devices such as smartphones. We varied the number of physical actuators (5, 7, and 9) and set two different speeds for the virtual vibration actuator. An absolute identification perception experiment was then conducted to examine how these parameters influence performance. Experimental results indicate that actuator arrangement has a statistically significant effect on the transmission of two-dimensional vector information, whereas the speed of the virtual vibration actuator does not exert a significant influence.
