Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing older adults’ positive perceptions of artificial intelligence by applying the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology(UTAUT) in the context of expanding AI-based services for the elderly. Specifically, the study investigates the effects of ICT device ownership and digital competence on positive perceptions of AI and tests the mediating role of digital competence in the relationship between ICT device ownership and AI perception. Using data from 11,403 older adults who participated in the 2024 Internet Usage Survey, a structural equation modeling approach was employed to validate the proposed research model. The results revealed that both ICT device ownership and digital competence exert significant direct effects on older adults’ positive perceptions of AI. Furthermore, digital competence was found to mediate the relationship between ICT device ownership and AI perception, indicating that device accessibility and personal capability interactively shape AI-related attitudes among older adults. Based on these findings, the study suggests strategies to enhance older adults’ positive perceptions of AI in the context of rapidly expanding AI-based welfare and care services.
