Abstract

This study surveyed 176 parents with children attending elementary, middle, or high school to provide foundational data for addressing the perception gap between parents and children, taking into account the cultural significance of gaming. The analysis yielded the following results. First, parents with more positive attitudes toward their own game use tended to show greater interest in their children’s gaming. Second, children of parents who primarily used console platforms exhibited lower levels of problems in daily life. Third, open communication between parents and children regarding games was associated with higher levels of positive gaming behaviors in children and fewer problems related to daily life and academic functioning. These findings confirm the relationship between parents’ gaming habits and attitudes and their children’s gaming behaviors, emphasizing the importance of parents recognizing games as a medium for leisure and communication in the lives of children and adolescents, and actively engaging in conversations about gaming. This study is significant in that it addresses the limitations of prior research focused primarily on game addiction and overindulgence by adopting the perspective of digital-native parents’ game-related parenting, and offers educational directions for fostering a healthy gaming culture.
