Improvement of Energy Efficiency in Plant Factories by Cooperative Control of Air Flow Devices

Abstract

Power consumption for air conditioning devices used to maintain an adequate temperature and air flow circulation in the plant factories occupies around 15~25% in total operation cost. Air conditioning device must be installed to maintain temperature for crop cultivation. However, if it is operated alone, it either decreases temperature deviation between cultivation beds or exerts a limit in improving air flow that is stagnant in some spaces. Therefore, in order to resolve such issues, the development of a control algorithm and system is necessary to reduce the entire operation time of air conditioning devices and to improve air flow that is stagnant in some areas by jointly operating air flow fans. In this study, a cooperative control algorithm that is the most effective for energy saving in the plant factory during winters is realized by measuring and analyzing indoor temperature distribution and power consumption which are being changed according to the operation condition of each air flow device. The experimental results using the control algorithm prove that the proposed system could reduce the operation time and power consumption by 50% and 52.6%, respectively, as compared with the existing system wherein only air conditioning device is operated.
