Abstract

Since the launch of ChatGPT, AI has had a direct impact on individuals' lives, significantly enhancing productivity across various sectors of society. Likewise, the defense sector could benefit from applying generative AI techniques, potentially improving the efficiency of defense operations. Particularly for the Republic of Korea, which is facing a demographic cliff and a resulting reduction in military personnel, generative AI could serve as a meaningful alternative to enable the execution of extensive tasks with a smaller workforce. This paper aims to explore recent trends in the application of generative AI in the defense sector by examining various cases from the United States which is a leader in generative AI technology, and reviewing the current implementation efforts in the Republic of Korea across both defense and public sectors. Through this analysis, the paper seeks to identify key elements for the future application of generative AI in defense, with the goal of effectively disseminating this technology to enhance the capabilities of the Republic of Korea’s military.
